About Dawson

Meet the Maxwell Family: Mom, Coleman, Sophia and Dawson. With the challenges of cerebral palsy come the difficulties that most CP families face; surgeries, mobility issues and added financial stresses due to accessibility needs.

However, Cerebral Palsy cannot stop a straight-A student with a great sense of humor and a mission. Dawson Maxwell’s mission is to walk one day. When possible, he walks with assistance. However, in the future, he dreams of walking completely on his own.

When not working on making his dream a reality, Dawson uses his power wheelchair to get around. Unfortunately, their current van, which is failing, cannot be used to transport such a large and heavy wheelchair; making it difficult to travel as needed.

Obviously, it also is putting an additional financial burden on his single mom, who is raising Dawson, his older brother Coleman and his sister Sophia. A new family van will finally help them to be able to travel with his power chair and give all of them more breathing room in their stretched family budget.

At Samantha’s House and Van, we are reaching out to others to help this wonderful family in this season of need. With your help, Dawson will have an opportunity to continue his schooling, travel as needed and follow his dream to walk on his own one day.

Below is a sample of Dawson’s poetry about his dream.

I am a very kind person in a wheelchair
I wonder when I will be able to walk
I see myself walking in the future
I want to walk on my own someday
I am a very kind person in a wheelchair

I pretend I am walking on my own
I feel like I could walk a thousand miles
I touch the carpet as I walk
I worry that I will never be able to walk
I cry of pain that I have when I am in my wheelchair
I am a very kind person in a wheelchair

I understand that I am in a wheelchair
I say everyday, “I can walk!”
I dream that I can walk someday
I try to walk everyday
I hope that I will be able to walk someday
I am a very kind person in a wheelchair
